Details

A self guided road cycling tour which makes a stunning 350km circuit from the town of Ronda out into the mountains and valleys of Malaga and Cadiz provinces. Six days of moderate-to-challenging road cycling on a 3-centre holiday, staying in the white villages of Ronda, Jimena de la Frontera and Ubrique. In each location you will do one circular ride and then a ride on to you next overnight location, so you have a chance to settle and chill out a little in each hotel and explore the local town’s restaurants for your dinner before moving on.

Southern Andalucia is the pefect place for road cycling, particularly if you are training for a sportive cycling event or simply want to challenge your legs and lungs with a series of long distance road rides and hill climbs. The region enjoys stunning mountain scenery, Cat 1 and Cat 2 climbs, great road surfaces with relatively little traffic and the best weather in Europe – what’s not to like!

On this road cycling tour week you can expect to get fitter and stonger and burn some serious calories – all the more to enjoy the fantastic local food and wine.

Day 1 - Arrival in Ronda

Check in to your hotel and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful clifftop town of Ronda. Briefing and bike set up will take place on your first evening

Day 2 - Setenil Circular

50km - 1076m ascent  

Warm up your legs for the week with an undulating mountain loop which takes in two of the oldest sites in the area. Ronda sits on top of a hill so you start with a long descent into the valley, followed immediately by a steady 10km climb up to the Roman ruins of Acinipo. Take a short break from the bike to walk up to the amphitheatre on top of the escarpment for spectacular views across to Grazalema – a glimpse of where you will be riding on Day 6. Another long descent takes you down into the village of Setenil de las Bodegas – a great lunchstop before you climb up to the village of Arriate and then on up to Ronda.

Day 3 - Ronda to Jimena

60km - 1294m ascent  

Today’s ride takes you along the full length of a 1000m high mountain ridge between two deep valleys; to the south, the Genal valley, full of chestnut trees, and to the north, the Guadiaro valley, with the river Guadiaro flowing along its base. After a climb out of Ronda, you enjoy an undulating road which passes through a series of white villages - Atajate, Benadalid, Algatocin and Gaucin. Then head down off the ridge on a fantastic twisting descent past fields and farms to sea level. A final quick cllimb takes you up to the village of Jimena for the next 2 nights.

Day 4 - Castellar de la Frontera Circular

68km - 740m ascent  

A gentler day today, with plenty of  distance but very little climbing, as you explore the region between Jimena and the coast. You ride past the castle at Castellar and breathe in the sea air as you come within  a couple of kms of the coast. Then sprint back through the countryside to Jimena, finishing with the short climb up into the village for your second night.

Day 5 - Jimena to Ubrique

55km - 1310m ascent  

Today you take a steady climb from only just above sea level up into the heart of the mountains of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park on an “away-from-it-all” route with no villages and only occasional traffic. You will ride through the Alcornocales Natural Park, with the road twisting and turning through miles of forests – pine, fir and holm oak. Take a break at the single venta (roadside restaurant) around halfway but be prepared to carry your own supplies today to keep you going through the hills.

Day 6 - Grazalema Circular

62km - 1682m ascent  

The toughest day today, although we have planned here the “easier” direction for this loop. You begin with  a 16km Cat 2 climb out of Ubrique village. A short breather on a flat section before you are climbing again to Grazalema village (lovely plaza for refreshment stop) and up out of the village to the top of the El Boyar Pass. We have been kind to you with this loop, as you now head down the road which in an uphill direction is known as “The Beast of Boyar”. Do this loop the other way round for the full Beast experience – 16km with an average 5.3% gradient.

Day 7 - Ubrique to Ronda

55km - 1485m ascent  

You begin today with another Cat 2 ascent of 10km out of Ubrique village to climb to the ridge along the northern edge of the Guadiaro valley, opposite the ridge you rode on Day 3. From the highpoint of 769m the road takes an undulating descent down to river level and the village of Jimera estacion before climbing straight back up into the mountains. Then you drop back to meet the river again before the final steady 12km climb back up to Ronda. Well done – you have completed your sportive tour!

Day 8 - Depart Ronda

Check out from your hotel and have a safe trip home or to your next destination.

Will I be fit enough?

 

Our self-guided sportive tours are designed for keen cyclists rather than leisure cycling. There are mountains throughout the region which will need to be tackled but often reward with long descents.

Just remember that in summer, higher temperatures can make riding seem harder so we suggest starting soon after 9am and aiming to finish before 3pm.

Double or twin room with en suite faciities in all locations.

Ronda hotel is normally 4****.

Jimena hotel is a characterful townhouse, refurbished as an exclusive boutique hotel in Moorish style, close to all the town's bars and restaurants. Or alternative hotel close to the village centre.

Ubrique hotel is 3*** just outside the village with swimming pool and large terrace with wonderful mountain views; easy access to the village centre. 

 

 

What to Bring

The essential kit to enjoy your cycling holiday

  • Helmet (bring you own or use ours - free of charge) 
  • Padded cycling shorts (essential kit for staying comfortable over a few days' riding)
  • Your own saddle if you prefer - let us know if you are bringing one

  • Cycling shoes (let us know if you want clip-in pedals) or trainers - firm soles are best.

  • Sun cream and after-sun lotion
  • Casual clothes, swimwear and footwear
  • Health insurance policy document (for UK travellers, a European Health Insurance Card, EHIC, will give you access to reduced cost medical services in Spain but it is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue, repatriation costs or lost or stolen property. For winter riding

  • extra body layers with long sleeves (thin thermal tops are great)
