Guided Walking Holidays in Spain

Centre based Walking & Hiking Holidays in Andalucia

Leave the crowds behind and take a walk along quiet pathways between mountain-top white villages; walk past olive groves and vineyards; scale Torrecilla, the highest mountain peak in western Andalucia.

On a walking holiday in Ronda, you are surrounded by a huge variety of terrain and landscape – there are lots of options for the leisure walker, who just wants to get out of town and into the countryside for a few hours each day, and also for the energetic hiker, who spots a distant mountain peak and simply wants to hike up it. The mountains provide many stunning vistas for you to enjoy on your walking holiday. From the top of Torrecilla, you can see for miles, down to the Costa del Sol, the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Africa to the south, aswell as over to the Sierra Nevada mountains to the east. We can spot the town of Ronda, sitting high on its rocky plateau, as a clearly visible landmark from viewpoints all around the region.

The limestone which forms the base of most of the landscape here creates dramatic cliffs, gorges and underground cave systems throughout the area. From the 120 metre gorge in the centre of Ronda itself to the delightful waterfall and crystal clear waterpool at the opening of the ”Cueva del Gato”, Cat Cave. Or the strangely eroded cliffs of the “Tajo del Abanico”, the Fan.

Cultural highlights

White villages are dotted throughout the local area, giving a taste of what life has been like here in this quiet corner of Andalucia for many hundreds of years. The pathways which cross the countryside were often the only routes in and out of the villages and out to remote farms – ancient drovers’ trails and donkey tracks that twist and climb through the craggy mountain landscape and through unspoilt woodland.

Most of the routes here involve some climbs and descents through the mountain sierras but there is no rush and you can take the climb at you own speed. Of course, 300+ days of sunshine a year make for wonderful hiking conditions – walking along dusty pathways under clear blue skies makes the cold drink and tapas at the end of each day especially refreshing!

The Finca

Fully inclusive walking holidays (half board) are based in a country finca just 4km from the historic town of Ronda. This beautifully restored Andalucian farmhouse retains all the charm of rural Spanish living, whilst offering you the modern comforts of en-suite bathrooms, ceiling fans / under-floor heating, depending on the season, free Wi-fi and satellite television. The finca is surrounded by olive groves and has its own tranquil gardens and a large swimming pool for cooling off after your walks.

Meals and Catering

Breakfast - Spanish hams and cheeses, cereals, fresh breads/pastries, fruit, juices, tea and coffee

Evening meals - Heather cooks and serves delicious, healthy 3-course evening meals on 4 nights of your week-long holiday. Our food is freshly prepared each day and tastes great - it is the perfect match to the hiking and biking activities which you will be doing during the daytime. We can cater for vegetarians in the finca - please advise vegetarian or other dietary requirements when you enquire about a finca holiday. Three nights are left free for you to explore Ronda's many restaurants and tapas bars or you can prepare your own food in the finca kitchen. Sample menu.

There is also a free bar for wines, beers and soft drinks.

Please note that during our peak season June - September, catered holidays in the Finca (guided or self guided) have a minimum booking requirement of 4 people; book for 4 people yourself or if you are less than 4 people, we can either try to join you up with other cyclists/walkers already booked in - just let us know the dates you wish to travel - or we can accommodate you in hotels or self catering apartments in Ronda.

The town of Ronda itself is justly famous for its many sites of interest from its Roman, Moorish and Renaissance past – the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), Arab Baths, Bullring and many other beautiful buildings. The town has an excellent selection of bars, restaurants and cafes, so you will never be short of places to eat, drink or simply watch the world go by over leisurely tapas and a beer. The Andalucians love to celebrate, so there are festivals, ferias and local events in most months of the year. During the summer months, much of life takes place outdoors and there is always something to see and do.

Guiding, Safety & Support

Before your walking holiday, we will discuss with you the type of walking you wish to do and help select a range of routes to suit you. When you arrive for your walking holiday, your guide will lead you through each day’s walk, pointing out interesting sights along the way and sharing with you many of the cultural aspects of rural Spain. For your safety and peace of mind, our guides are fully qualified Outdoor First Aiders and carry a first aid kit at all times.

In order to maximise each day of your walking holiday and to get us out into the wider countryside beyond Ronda’s immediate environs, our minibus is available to take us out to start points at other white villages or to bring us back to Ronda after a great day out in the mountains. The minibus is also available if at any time you find you have bitten off a bit more than you can chew and need a helping hand to get you back to Ronda at the end of your day’s Andalucian walking.
